Telpethoron's Book of Tales

Nov. 18th, 2008 12:48 pm LiveJournal maintenance

Well, the entire LiveJournal site is down for maintenance today for (approximately) 4 hours while they move the data servers to a new location. Frankly, with a site this big I'd say 4 hours is a conservative estimate. I don't expect the site to be fully up and running until later this afternoon or early evening. Still, it's not as bad as it sounds. At the very least, I can catch up on the latest episode of Stargate Atlantis and work on getting the house ready for Christmas. It's been a while since I've seriously decorated for the holidays, and I'm looking forward to it.

Mar. 19th, 2008 01:57 pm Relaxing with the sounds of nature

I came across the Relax with Nature website earlier today while surfing on LiveJournal. It's a site filled with video clips of nature scenes from around the world, designed to help you relax while listening to calming sounds such as running water, rainfall and jungle noises.

I've downloaded a number of clips from the site and will be converting them for use with my Playstation Portable. They'll definitely come in handy when I'm doing research on the Net or catching up on my reading. Here's one example of the clips you can find:

Mar. 19th, 2008 12:56 am Helping the environment in small ways

I've spent a good deal of time over the past few months learning about ways to protect the environment. Most people are familiar with things like recycling and such, but not many actually put those things into practice. It's my aim to help change that attitude, starting with myself.

One of the main benefits of my relationship with my bank (Wachovia) is their Wachovia Rewards program. As you spend money on various purchases, you earn points toward various 'rewards' that can be redeemed online in Wachovia's Rewards Catalog. It features a large selection of products in a wide range of areas - from home repair and electronics to home businesses and health/wellness.

I came across two products in the catalog tonight that piqued my interest. The first was a natural cotton bag holder. It hangs on a doorknob, and can be used to store plastic grocery bags. I have a large collection of said bags that I've acquired over the past few months, and which have been relegated to a drawer in my kitchen. I've used them from time to time to transport my packed lunch to work daily, and I keep getting new ones all the time - so something like this would definitely come in handy (not to mention freeing up space in my kitchen).

The second item is one that I've actually owned before - a digital clock/sound machine. I owned one years ago and loved it - I've always found it soothing to fall asleep listening to 'outdoor sounds' such as falling rain or waves crashing on the beach. I have a standard clock radio, but I'm not keen on falling asleep to music (I've tried it, and it just doesn't work for me). This would be a much better alternative, I believe. I've been known to fall asleep with relative ease listening to a storm outside my bedroom window.

There are other items in the catalog that I'm looking to purchase in the coming months, once my reward points have built back up again. I like the idea of incorporating more 'natural' items into my daily life.
